Taking into account Malaysia’s pressing need to produce specialists in various medical disciplines in order to promote advancements in medicine, the Kulliyyah of Medicine offers Master in Orthopaedic Surgery. The programme is a clinical coursework programme in which research is a component.
Programme Description
1. Full time 4 years programme
2. The maximum duration of study shall be seven years
The programme is divided into 4 years aimed at allowing progressive mastery of knowledge, skills and attitude, increasing responsibilities and independence.
Year 1
The general objective is to enable students to acquire knowledge of the basic medical sciences and principles of orthopaedic surgery. To apply the knowledge in the clinical problem-solving and decision-making process in the management of patients including performance of operative procedures under supervision.
Trainees will be rotated in General Surgery, Orthopaedics and Traumatology and Intensive Care posting.
Year 2
The general objective is to enable students to acquire knowledge, skills and develop good attitude appropriate for the management of patients in the various surgical Orthopaedics subspecialties which will be useful in their general Orthopaedics practice.
Year 3
The general objective is to enable the trainee to acquire knowledge, skills and develop attitude in the management of patients and the orthopaedics team in General Orthopaedic Surgery at the level of the registrar.
Year 4
The general objective is to enable the trainee to function as the senior registrar in the orthopaedic team and to manage critically ill patients. The trainee will be able to perform the right hand person to the consultant
Entry Requirements
• English Language Proficiency: Applicants are required to present a valid certificate for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) or the IIUM administered English Placement Test (EPT) with required minimum scores of 550 (TOEFL) and 6.0 (IELTS & EPT - individual bands).
•a) The degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS or MD) of the University or an equivalent medical qualification approved by the Senate; b) Qualifies for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia; and c) At least three year of post-registration clinical experience certified by the relevant
• Entrance tests: Submission of satisfactory test scores of an internationally recognized graduate test will be considered for those holding first degrees from institutions of higher learning that are not accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education. They may also have to sit an Aptitude Test if deemed necessary by the Kulliyyah Board of Postgraduate Studies
