Overview of Bachelor Of Social Sciences (Hons) Anthropology And Sociology in University of Sarawak Sarawak UNIMAS Malaysia
Anthropology and Sociology programme offers a thorough theoretical foundation for enhancing students’ analytical skills when interpreting society and its issues. It provides extensive knowledge on themes like environment, culture, deviance, youth, indigenous communities, and globalisation. The programme is at the forefront in the development of Borneo studies incorporated through teaching and research by examining the contributions of the discipline to our knowledge on Bornean societies and transformation. In this connection, the programme’s pursuit of the scholarly lines of inquiry is to critically reflect on the challenges and contradictions arising from the global forces and the effects of capitalist rationalisation on contemporary societies.
The programme shall produce graduates who can:
Demonstrate competency in describing and analysing social realities drawing from epistemological and ontological tools in the discipline of sociology and anthropology.
Apply practical skills and technique in conducting research on contemporary social-cultural issues in Borneo.
Demonstrate sensitivity and respect of cultural diversity as the main strength in realising and sustaining a just and inclusive Malaysian society.
Engage in community development and community works that requires collaboration with clients, partners and stakeholders from various socioeconomic and socio-cultural backgrounds.
Upon graduating from this program, the students are able to:
Describe, define and differentiate the principles and concepts of anthropology and sociology.,
Prepare, interpret and analyse anthropological and sociological data gathered in the course of fieldwork.,
Appreciate the value of teamwork and collaboration in achieving collective goals without compromising ethics and moral values.
Display awareness in ethical and professional integrity when devising programmes and activities that considers community voices and perspectives.,
Communicate effectively with colleagues, communities and stakeholders through awareness of diversity of cultures, thoughts and opinions.,
Able to apply scientific knowledge and emphatic understanding when interpreting and proposing solutions for issues that have profound effects on society in areas such as health, livelihood, ecology, development, social integration and crimes.,
Demonstrate willingness to improve self-understanding and professional knowledge in addressing the ever-growing global challenges.
Display entrepreneurial skills such as thinking, analysing and organising skills that can be harnessed for developing a sustainable community culturally and economically.
Entry Requirements
STPM
Obtained at least Grade C (NGMP 2.00) at STPM level in any two (2) subjects (excluding General Studies) And
Obtained at least passed Grade E at SPM level in the following subjects:
Mathematics / Additional Mathematics
English And
Obtained at least Level 2 (Band 2) in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET)
