Overview of Bachelor Of Social Sciences (Hons) Social Work Studies in University of Sarawak Sarawak UNIMAS Malaysia
Professional social work practice in Malaysia is becoming much more relevant in the last few decades because of rapid urbanization, changes in family structures, diminishing traditional support network and the increasing number of social problems. The main purpose of social work is about the enhancement of human well being and the promotion of social justice and social development. The courses offered by this programme are intended to prepare and equip the students with knowledge on the interaction between human and society, Students learn theories and skills in social work to enable them to play their roles effectively in helping or working with individuals, groups and communities as well as formulating social policies. This programme is broad-based, drawing on knowledge from other social science disciplines and behavioural sciences, such as planning, management, and both communication and interpersonal skills.
The programme shall produce graduates who are:
Engage empathetically with people requiring social work intervention and/in order to address their needs in a professionally competent manner,
Apply the values of social work throughout their practice and critically analyse social issues, policies and services in order to constructively contribute to developing responses at both the micro and macro level which can reduce social problems,
Be able to conduct research on social issues that can be utilized for solving problem of immediate concern of target groups (particularly the marginalized groups) in order to bring about change to individual, group, and community and to improve their well-being, and
Use reflection and continuous learning to enhance professional competencies.
Upon graduating from this program, the students are able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and skills needed to work with individuals, families, groups and communities,
Integrate knowledge, values and skills in social work practice,
Exhibit communication skills required to work with various clients groups and communities, and in inter-agency and intra-agency settings,
Apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills in analyzing social issues and addressing problems at different levels of interventions,
Apply professional social work practice and skills in a multidisciplinary teamwork setting,
Engage in critical reflection of various topic areas related to ongoing development of professional competency,
Plan and organize services, programme and policies addressing needs and concerns at family, communities and societal level, and
Internalise the core social work values with special emphasis on anti-discriminatory/oppressive practice, social justice, cultural diversity, equality and human right.
Entry Requirements.
STPM
Obtained at least Grade C (NGMP 2.00) at STPM level in any two (2) subjects (excluding General Studies) And
Obtained at least passed Grade E at SPM level in the following subjects:
Mathematics / Additional Mathematics
English And
Obtained at least Level 2 (Band 2) in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET)
