Kulliyyah of Dentistry was first established in 2006, which award Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree. It is a five-year programme with a good and comprehensive curriculum integrated with an Islamic values. Our first intake of student was in July 2007 and graduated in August 2012. We have produced good dental undergraduates who have an excellence knowledge and reputable skills with a high standard of professional ethics which are in line with IIUM vision, i.e. to restore the roles of Muslims in education, knowledge creation and acquisition as well as to contribute to the improvement of quality of life for all mankind

The bachelor of dental surgery degree prepares students for work in:
i) Ministry of Health;
ii) Ministry of Defense;
iii) Ministry of Higher Education;
iv) Private Practice;
v) Researcher;
vi) Spokesperson for oral care company; and
vii) Businessman – supplier, own dental clinic chain, contractor, etc.
Bachelor of Dental Surgery, IIUM is a five-year programme. Students are taught in a block system and there are four blocks in a year. In order to graduate, students’ need to complete both the university required courses and Kulliyyah core courses. For Kulliyyah core courses, they are divided into two phases; Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 1 focuses on the pre-clinical training. It consists of Basic Medical and Dental Sciences courses which will be taught in Year 1 and Year 2 of studies. The courses are Anatomy, Physiology, Oral Biology and Biochemistry for Year 1 and Pharmacology, Pathology, Immunology & Microbiology, Dental Material for Year 2. All of these courses will be assessed in the Professional I Examination for Year 1 and Professional II Examination for Year 2. There are also dental courses that will be taught in Year 1 and/or Year 2 which are Dental Public Health, Conservative Dentistry and Prosthetic Dentistry; and these courses will continue until Year 5. Phase 2 is a clinical phase which will be taught in Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 where the students will start treating patient. There are certain clinical requirements that the students need to fulfil before they are eligible to sit for Professional III and IV Examination. All dental core courses will start in Year 3; Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology. General Medicine and General Surgery courses will also be taught in Year 3 and they will be assessed in Professional III Examination at the end of Year 3. In Year 4, apart from dental core courses, the students will be introduced to research and there will be research findings presentation in Year 5 during Dental Student Scientific Conference. The research findings report also need to be submitted. In Year 5, the Integrated Dental Practice courses will be introduced to students so that they are ready to treat the public. All dental core courses will be assessed in Professional IV Examination at the end of Year 5. |
