ABOUT THIS PROGRAMME
Geomatic Engineering may sound new, but it is one of the oldest disciplines in engineering. It may also be known as Land Surveying.
We may have heard of surveying, digital mapping, digital photos, computer visualization, Electronic Distance Measurements (EDM), Global Positioning systems (GPS), Geographic Information systems (GIS), remote sensing, photogrammetry, drone-based mapping, satellites, and laser scanning. These are all part of geomatics.
Geomatic Engineers are multi-disciplinary in their knowledge and are particularly needed in the development of a country.
What is this programme about?
This programme is a mixture of theory and practice in land and geospatial engineering.
You will be able to conduct all sorts of hands-on work, from simple land surveying, up to the advanced geographical information system and remote sensing application.
Geomatics is a term to describe the science and technology of earth measurements. It focuses on spatial information which is the digital connection between location, people and activities.
With the evolution of technology we have today, the collection, sorting, planning, design, storing, presentation and management are made easier.
Is this programme for me?
If you have a great interest in mathematics, then this programme is suitable for you as there will be a lot of calculations.
Students who are outdoor oriented would also love this programme as they will be involved in field work and site visits.
What will I learn?
This programme requires a variety of skills which includes computers, measurement and designs. There will be rigorous calculations needed in this area of study and work.
You will learn the basics of land surveying, as well as other spatial surveying including engineering surveying that is involved in all construction work. You will also experience processing the ground spatial data by using softwares and portray in 3D view.
Students will undergo 4 months of industrial training. Students will gain valuable industry related working experience through this training.
What should I expect?
A career in this field will include both office and field work. Students may also have the opportunity to travel around the world. If you want to be a part of an exciting, innovative and challenging industry, this is the right path for you.
Is this programme accredited?
Yes, this programme is fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
